The management of the non-academic side of any school is complex. Like a jigsaw, hundreds of pieces have to fit together and the larger picture cannot emerge unless they do so. Problems can arise if people lose sight of that larger picture; others perhaps never knew what it was.

There is virtue in standing back from the ever changing scene in a school to check that all key personnel do still have their eye on the big picture, to look at the management structure and check that systems and lines of communication do facilitate decision making rather than impede them.

Because a school is relatively small does not mean that its management problems are any easier than those of a large organisation. On the contrary, they might loom larger because there will be fewer staff to deal with them. It follows therefore that the routine aspects of bursarial management, especially financial management, should be simple, focused and as efficient as possible.
